As the warm, relaxed days of summer begin to wind down, the anticipation of a new school year starts to build. For many families, this time of year brings a mix of emotions: a bittersweet farewell to the spontaneous adventures and flexible schedules of summer, coupled with the exciting anticipation of fresh starts, new friendships, and personal growth.
By gently adjusting our home environments and daily habits now, we can help our children feel grounded and capable as they step into new school year. A little intentional planning in these final weeks of summer can make the return to school smoother, calmer, and much more joyful. Here are some of our favorite ways to help your child prepare for the upcoming academic year and build confidence before the first day!
Reset the Routine
Rested children are resilient children, and everything else flows from a steady daily routine.
Shift sleep gradually. Nudging the clock on bedtime and naps by just 10–15 minutes every few days makes the adjustment much easier on growing bodies.
Dial back screen time. Less scrolling in the weeks leading up to school helps children reconnect with deeper focus and self-directed play.
Reestablish predictable daily rhythms. Consistent meals, play, rest, and outdoor time help children feel secure and ready.
Rehearse the Morning
Mornings are where good intentions go to unravel, but practice makes perfect! When the routine itself is familiar, the first day of school becomes just one more variation on something your child already knows how to do. A few low-pressure trial runs now can save a season of frantic scrambles later.
Do a few dress rehearsals. Get dressed, put on shoes, and leave the house “on time” even if you're only headed to the park.
Practice the drop-off. Saying hello to teachers and goodbye to parents with confidence takes rehearsal, too. A consistent farewell ritual — a hug, a special handshake, or a silly send-off — works wonders.
Lean Into Independence
If you've spent time in a Montessori classroom, you know our favorite phrase: "Help me to do it myself." Children are far more capable than we often give them credit for, and every small task they master builds real, earned confidence they carry straight into the classroom.
Encourage age-appropriate self-care. Take advantage of the easy pace of summer to practice these skills. During the year your child might be putting away belongings, toileting, dressing, or managing a hefty backpack, and now is the perfect time to work on those skills without the pressure.
Let them carry their own gear. Backpack, lunchbox, water bottle— whatever they can handle. Ownership builds confidence!
Pack lunches together. Invite your child to choose and prepare healthy foods. A child who packed their own strawberries eats those strawberries with considerably more enthusiasm.
Prepare the Heart and Mind
How children feel about returning to school shapes how they experience those first weeks, and the attitudes they absorb at home set the tone. A little intentional warmth now helps excitement outweigh the jitters:
Read books about starting school and talk positively about returning to the classroom. Enthusiasm is contagious!
Spend generous time outdoors. Fresh air and movement reset routines, rebuild stamina, and reconnect children with nature. (This is Colorado — the trails are practically calling!)
For older children, skip the workbooks. Ease back in with reading for pleasure, journaling, or hands-on projects that spark curiosity rather than formal academics.
Talk about the year ahead. What are they excited to learn? Who do they hope to see? Setting small goals together turns the first day into something they're walking toward.
Make School Feel Familiar
Seeing our campus can be a wonderful way to help school feel like a familiar place for your child— whether you stop in for a visit or simply drive by while on a day out. Pointing out the equipment in the outdoor environments, the gate where they’ll be dropped off, and the front door helps the environment feel familiar and comfortable rather than brand new.
However your family eases back in, know this: children are remarkably capable, and a little intention now goes a long way. Pick the ideas that fit your child and your rhythm, keep the tone light, and trust that the rest will fall into place. And if the first drop-off still comes with a wobbly lip (theirs or yours!), take heart: within days, most children are striding through the door like they own the place.
From all of us at Mountain Shadows, we can't wait to welcome everyone back for another wonderful year of growing, discovering, and doing it themselves!
