Nido

A Montessori Environment for Infants (8 weeks – 18 months)

The word Nido comes from the Italian word for “nest,” beautifully reflecting the essence of this environment—a place of warmth, safety, and gentle beginnings. At Mountain Shadows, our Nido classroom is designed to nurture trust and security while supporting each child’s natural rhythm of development. The space itself is calm, orderly, and aesthetically simple—inviting curiosity and peaceful discovery. Infants are encouraged to explore freely, move independently, and build confidence through meaningful experiences. With a focus on respect and consistency, our Montessori-trained guides offer individualized care, helping each child feel seen, heard, and loved.

Our Philosophy

In these earliest months of life, the foundation of trust is formed. Our Nido team responds to each infant’s needs with tenderness and respect, cultivating this trust through every feeding, interaction, and transition. This secure attachment allows the child to begin exploring the world with confidence, laying the groundwork for independence, concentration, and joyful learning. We partner closely with families, honoring your routines and observations as we work together to provide continuity between home and school.

“The child, making use of all that he finds around him, shapes himself for the future.”
— Dr. Maria Montessori

A Prepared Environment for the Infant

Our Nido environment is purposefully designed to feel like an extension of home. Every detail—from the natural light that fills the room to the soft, organic materials—supports a sense of safety and belonging. You will not find playpens, walkers, or high chairs here; instead, infants are free to move, roll, pull up, and explore at their own pace. Low shelving displays simple materials that invite sensory exploration and purposeful movement. Cozy rugs and mirrors at child level help babies observe and connect with their surroundings. An adjoining outdoor space offers opportunities for fresh air, natural light, and the quiet observation of nature.

Partnership with Families

The relationship between home and school is essential in the Nido. Parents and educators communicate regularly to ensure alignment in routines, care, and developmental goals. Together, we celebrate milestones, navigate transitions, and create a shared sense of community around each child’s growth.
