History
Mountain Shadows Montessori School of
Boulder, Colorado, was founded in 1976 as a private, non-profit,
school. It has grown from a classroom of fourteen children
operating in a rented church facility to a campus of 165
students situated on twelve acres in rural Boulder.
Mountain Shadows distinguishes itself as an AMI (Association
Montessori International) accredited school.
Governance
Mountain Shadows is a non-profit corporation,
governed by a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors
is charged with furthering the school's Mission and ensuring the
school's success through systematic, long-term planning, policy
making, fiduciary oversight, fundraising leadership, and yearly
evaluation of the Executive Director's performance. The
Board values the School's unique AMI certification and does not
address issues regarding curriculum and pedagogy. Except
for executive sessions, Board meetings are open to parents and
staff and they are welcome to attend. In fact, active
parent participation in ALL aspects of school life is essential
to ensure a high quality program.
The Board has appointed an Executive Director
to oversee the smooth functioning of the school pedagogically
and administratively. The Executive Director works closely
with the staff within the school to ensure that the school
maintains its high quality of education and operations.
Whole-school decisions are made by the
Executive Director, who is also the final arbiter for unresolved
grievances. The Executive Director may seek the approval
of the Faculty and/or the Board, as appropriate.
