A Real Montessori School

A Montessori school differs from a traditional school in many aspects, from how the classrooms are arranged to the way a child receives instruction. At Mountain Shadows we follow the True Montessori Method as established by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early twentieth century. This fidelity to her scientifically developed ideals is what ensures your child will receive the highest quality Montessori education available in Colorado.

What is a Montessori school?
A Montessori education is founded on the principle that all children have an innate ability to learn. At a Montessori school, a richly prepared environment that embodies beauty, simplicity, and order encourages and enables that learning. In the Montessori classroom, the teacher acts as a guide for the children, introducing them to learning materials and activities according to their individual development. Teachers instruct by demonstrating, observing, and guiding, rather than dictating. As students progress, instruction becomes much more collaborative between teacher and student.

Each program (Primary, Elementary I, and Elementary II) includes mixed-aged groups. As children master specific skills, they are invited and encouraged to help younger students who, having first received instruction from the teacher, are working towards mastery. Older students are also taught to respect a younger student’s learning styles and needs.

Overall, the Montessori method is good preparation for life. It effectively links the school, the home, and the community. Cooperative learning and shared responsibility are two of its primary goals.
